Pictures: Ruined Family Room Glaze on Walls by using Cabinet Stain. Caused Homeowner Added Expense of Repainting Family Room.
Sean Thompson claimed he knew how to glaze the section of wall where the unit was re-installed to match the rest of the room. He started to glaze behind the unit in the back corner and surprisingly it turned out decent however, he proceeded to glaze the walls on either side of the unit. This is where it started to look worse than a kids finger painting project (see Pic #1- stain). It was terrible! I was so saddened by his inexperience and at this point, I truly thought that he was trying to take advantage of me by having me spend more money to fix his mistakes. He constantly was saying how this job was under bid and he has been here longer than he should (3 weeks total). After he got done glazing incorrectly, he told me that I would have to paint the room. He charged an ex-absorbent amount of money to paint and gave bad advice when it comes to picking color and type(s) of finishes i.e. eggshell vs semi gloss, etc. Don't let him fool you, he knows nothing of painting but claims that his father was an excellent painter.
Proceeding to Paint the Family Room (and Kitchen):
Sean told me that since he was already spending way too much time on my house, other clients he has are being put on hold. He said that I needed to make my paint choices today so that he could get the paint and start painting the next day to get the job completed in two days. I understood and no one wanted the entire project done more than me but I too wanted a classy job not a rush job. The colors chosen for both the family room and kitchen were way to light and the kitchen color was lime green not the kelly green i thought was getting. He failed to take into consideration all the light both rooms get; the paint turned out horrible as semi-gloss was chosen and there was way too much sheen on the walls. He told me that he was going to do the painting himself, but the following day he brought over a non-skilled painter, Jose Gatica. He said yet again, that he had spent too much time on my projects and that he needed to start on bigger jobs. I felt pushed to the side but thought that the painter would do a good job but little did I know that I would be helping the painter to paint because he couldn't reach certain spots claiming he had short arms. The painter, Jose Gatica, also told me that I should leave the original color behind the refrigerator and just paint what you can see with your eye. He said since you are shorter, you won't see the red behind the refrigerator so no need to paint. Problem, I know the color is there and that will bother me plus, I wasn't paying for the painter or Sean to cut corners. In speaking with Sean, he said he had one trick to try and paint behind the refrigerator but after a few discussions with Jose he decided without looking at the area that he too couldn't paint it and it would have to be left. After Jose put a few nap strokes on the main kitchen wall, I was blinded by the brightness of the color and asked him to stop.
Final Outcome:
After explaining the situation of both rooms to Sean's wife, Valerie, it was decided that since the mistake with the glaze was Sean's fault that I was not held responsible for payment which I thought was only right considering I already paid for more paint than the project called for and a huge container of oil based primer that wasn't hardly used. Now, I have to hire a skilled painter to fix the job Sean messed up in the first place.
